2018 Mazda CX-5

2018 MAZDA CX-5

Cost

Given all the improvements we saw for 2018 and the quality touches the Mazda CX-5 received, this compact crossover SUV remains one of the least expensive in the compact SUV segment. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 starts at $24,000, although the price will vary depending on the trim chosen.

Performance

The Mazda CX-5’s precise steering ability appears to drive better than the previous year with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower. Due to the force this vehicle produces, cylinder deactivation comes into play making the Mazda CX-5 fuel-efficient. To improve every driver's needs, the Mazda CX-5 gives the option to add AWD on all available trims.

Cargo and Space

This five-passenger compact crossover is spacious enough for the whole family to enjoy long adventures. The Mazda CX-5 offers 30.9 cubic feet of trunk space. When additional space is needed, the rear seats can be brought down to a 40/20/40 split, increasing the cargo volume to 59.6 cubic feet. The dimensions of this compact crossover were given to the Mazda CX-5 with family and adventures in mind!

Features

The Mazda CX-5 was given the soft touch of an upscale vehicle. You’d think you were driving a high-end SUV thanks to the high-quality interior. Mazda recognized the need for safety and technology. A standard Mazda CX-5 now includes G-Vectoring Control, a rearview camera, low-speed automatic braking, and much more.

Honda CR-V

Honda CR-V

Cost

The Honda CR-V MSRP starts at $24,150 and can go all the way up to $34,050.

Performance

The standard engine being a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower seems to have similar efficiency the Mazda CX-5. However, the CR-V takes the lead with its 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine on higher trims. On the highway, you will see 33 MPG. The Mazda CX-5 still outperforms the CR-V with its power and towing capability while still being fuel-efficient.

Cargo and Space

The ride is comfortable as it mirrors other compact crossover SUVs with its five-passenger capacity. The component that stands out in the CR-V is its rear seat, which is packed with roominess. The total cargo space available is 75.8 cubic feet.

Features

The 2018 CR-V may not be as athletic looking as the Mazda CX-5 but it does offer standard features every driver needs. Available safety features include but are not limited to adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and a power liftgate. The Honda CR-V managed to keep its 2017 redesign for 2018 on all four trim levels. Smart features are also included on higher trims like the EX.

Toyota RAV4

Toyota RAV4

Cost

This year the RAV4 starts at $24,410 and price increases as a higher trim level is chosen. Prices can go up to $34,750.

Performance

The gas mileage on the RAV4 is typical and gets 29 MPG on the highway. This SUV is efficient, but it doesn’t lead in this category unless the Hhybrid trim is chosen. The Toyota RAV4 is on the low end when it comes to power with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine available. With the 176-horsepower available you will not find it as strong as the Mazda CX-5.

Cargo and Space

Storage and leg room is reasonable compared to the Mazda CX-5. There is comfort throughout the front-end of the vehicle but gets a little tighter towards the back-end. The RAV4 can seat up to five and offers a 60/40 split. Compared to the Mazda CX-5, the dynamics do not offer as smooth a ride.

Features

The Toyota RAV4 is known to be a solid vehicle and has ranked above other crossover SUVs. The reason being it has always been reliable with safety being a number one consideration. Every trim level offers a rearview camera, emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and other equipment. There are safety features that can be added with Toyota's safety bundles.

Subaru Forester

Subaru Forester

Cost

The Forester is a good SUV and starts at $24,857. The highest trim is available starting at $36,090.

Performance

The 2018 Subaru Forester has its own kind of capabilities and performance. Efficiency is great, but it performs better when a higher trim is selected. The Forester has the capability to get you from point A to point B with less power than the Mazda CX-5. The Forester is paired with 170 horsepower. AWD is standard and has an optional turbo engine.

Cargo and Space

The 2018 Forester did not have any drastic distinctions besides its cargo capacity. The Forester takes the lead when it comes to cargo space. The space provided is 75 cubic feet which is a lot more than the Mazda CX-5 or any other vehicle of its kind.

Features

The 2017 changes for the Subaru Forester were carried over for 2018. This year, the Forester made a few features standard on higher trims. When it comes to technology, the Forester sits behind the rest offering fewer options than the rest, though the option to include safety features like a rearview camera or lane assist is available through the safety system offering.
